Every year, millions of animals lose their homes, food sources, and even their lives due to the leather industry. While leather might seem like just a fashion choice, its impact on wildlife is devastating—from deforestation and climate change to toxic pollution.

Deforestation: The Silent Killer

The Amazon rainforest, one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on Earth, is being destroyed at an alarming rate— 80% of its deforestation is linked to cattle ranching for leather production. Jaguars, sloths, macaws, and countless other species are losing their habitats, pushing many toward extinction. As forests vanish, so do the food chains that sustain these animals, leaving them struggling to survive.

Climate Change: A Ripple Effect on Wildlife

Leather isn’t just bad for forests—it’s a major contributor to climate change. The livestock industry, including cattle farming for leather, is responsible for up to 19% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Rising temperatures, droughts, and extreme weather events are forcing wildlife to migrate, disrupting ecosystems and making survival harder for species like elephants, rhinos, and antelopes.

Water Pollution: A Toxic Trap

Leather tanning is one of the most polluting industries in the world. For every ton of leather processed, up to 250 tons of toxic wastewater is released into rivers and lakes. These chemicals, including chromium and sulfides, poison fish, turtles, and other aquatic life, creating deadly "dead zones" where no life can survive. Birds and pollinators, essential for maintaining biodiversity, also suffer as polluted water seeps into soil and plants.

A Call for Change

The cost of leather is far more than just money—it’s the loss of irreplaceable wildlife. By choosing sustainable, plant-based alternatives, we can reduce the industry’s environmental toll and protect the species that make our planet thrive. It’s time to rethink fashion and choose a future where wildlife and ecosystems are valued over outdated traditions.
